Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Country Gravy

Buttermilk fried chicken is a classic Southern dish that combines crispy, flavorful chicken with creamy mashed potatoes and rich country gravy. This comforting meal is perfect for family dinners or special occasions when you want to serve something hearty and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups buttermilk
  • 2 pounds chicken pieces (drumsticks, thighs, breasts)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 large potatoes
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the gravy:
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Start by marinating the chicken in buttermilk for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results. This tenderizes the meat and adds flavor. In a shallow dish, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off, then coat each piece thoroughly in the seasoned flour.

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry the chicken in batches, cooking until golden brown and cooked through, about 12-15 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Making Mashed Potatoes

While the chicken cooks, peel and chop the potatoes. Boil in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.

Preparing Country Gravy

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually add chicken broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Serving

Plate the crispy fried chicken alongside a generous serving of mashed potatoes. Drizzle with warm country gravy for extra flavor. This dish is best enjoyed hot, with a side of green beans or your favorite vegetables for a complete meal.
