Making sushi at home can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially when you try new ingredients like millet. Millet is a nutritious grain that can serve as a perfect base for sushi rolls, offering a gluten-free alternative to traditional rice. In this guide, you’ll learn how to prepare millet-based sushi rolls step-by-step.
Ingredients Needed
- 1 cup millet
- 2 cups water
- Nori seaweed sheets
- Fresh vegetables (cucumber, avocado, carrots)
- Fresh fish or cooked shrimp (optional)
- Soy sauce and wasabi for serving
- Vinegar, sugar, and salt for seasoning millet
Preparing the Millet
Start by rinsing the millet thoroughly under cold water to remove any debris. In a pot, combine the millet with 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes until the water is absorbed and the millet is tender. Once cooked, fluff the millet with a fork.
While the millet is still warm, season it with a mixture of 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1 teaspoon sugar, and a pinch of salt. Mix well to give it a slightly tangy flavor similar to sushi rice.
Assembling the Sushi Rolls
Place a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat or a clean surface. Spread an even layer of seasoned millet over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge free of millet for sealing the roll.
Add your choice of fillings—vegetables, fish, or shrimp—across the center of the millet layer. Be careful not to overfill to make rolling easier.
Using the sushi mat or your hands, carefully roll the nori from the bottom, applying gentle pressure to keep the roll tight. Seal the edge with a little water if needed.
Serving Your Millet Sushi
Slice the sushi roll into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife. Serve immediately with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger for an authentic experience. Enjoy your homemade millet-based sushi rolls!
